Yeah, now that I've learned how to recolor objects, I thought, "Hey, why not try something a little more complicated. Remember all those hair meshes you like, and hate the colors?"
I found this mesh a while ago, and loved it, but the hair colors left much to be desired (it's a Helga mesh for VitaSims). So I got me some Pooklet colors and went to work.
One thing that drives me nuts about any mesh with a hat-like accessory is the fact that the creators always seem to use a different color headpiece for each hair color. But what if my brunette sim doesn't like purple or green or whatever color you think matches? So I did a 4-color family for each of these headscarfs. And I changed the child recolors to use the headscarf as the pattern for the headband (it was a hideous purple paisly color). It's not perfect, by any means, but I'm pretty please with myself. Take a look:

The was also a version without the bangs. I initially liked it better but now I'm not so sure. So I only did the blue scarf for this. The child hairdo is exactly the same, so no previews.

Not too bad for a first-timer.
I also had a knit cap mesh from XM Sims and a recolor I got at MTS. Did the same thing as above, and created 4-color families around each hat color.

I know that some of the colors don't look great with some of the hairs, but I didn't care.
The hair colors are all Pooklet's (Black-Dynamite; Brown-Depth Charge; Blonde-Incendiary; Red-Explosive; Gray-Time Bomb). I binned and familied them using the Quick Easy Hair Binner by CatOfEvilGenius over on MTS.
There are a few other hairs I'm going to take a stab at because I dislike their colors (*coughPeggyZoneRedscough*), but they're a little more complicated and will take a little more patience, which I don't have right now.
And that is what I did today instead of playing.

on 2011-06-14 02:30 am (UTC)I didn't upload them, so no, you didn't miss a link. I'd have to go check mesh policies before doing so, but if you think they're worth it, I'd be willing to do so.
