I thought my costume making days were over, when I stopped working for my college theater department. I guess I was wrong.
For the Generation 7, I needed a few outfits. Most notably a nurse's uniform, as it is necessary to pay homage to the role women played in World War II. But trying to find what I needed...that was another story. Most of the nurse uniforms I found were a) too modern to be useful or b) too "naughty" to be tasteful. And the one nurse's cap that I could find...well, the link was dead and it wasn't on the Graveyard or anywhere else I could find.
I eventually discovered a uniform that resembled what I wanted, but on a body shape mesh that I did not. So, I "borrowed" the textures, and slapped them on a Maxis mesh (the lovely pink or green flowered dress that came with the Base Game). To help reduce the shine a little (old textures are crap, but still better than anything I came up with on my own), I overlayed a white fabric to give it a little texture. The result:

I'm still not 100% happy with it, but it's the best I've come up with so far. And as I'll only need it for a few scenes, I'm not sure I want to stress over it any longer.
As I did my research, I also discovered that there were nurses' aides. Their uniforms were much different, so I needed to come up with something for them as well. I liked the maid outfit that came with Bon Voyage, and I found a recolor on GoS that had the shade of blue that I wanted. I just made one simple edit of the texture from there. I have 2 versions right now, as I can't decided what shade of blue I prefer.

I'm leaning towards version 1 right now, because that appears to be closer to the color in the picture I saw.
Okay, moving on from there. Back in the day, nurses had caps. I'm sure you've seen them in movies or on TV. I couldn't find anything that even came close to that. So, I took a crown mesh (actually two), and made them myself.
Cap 1 is made from a mesh by Windkeeper. I like it because it doesn't make itself into a circlet like so many crown/tiara meshes do, but it's still got its metallic quality and I can't seem to fix it.

It's hard to see in this picture, but it shines when there's direct light on it.
The other had, which I'm thinking of using for the nurses' aides I like better, because it looks more like it's made from heavily starched material.

But what I don't like is that it's a full circle, with the emblem on the back side too.
So, that's what I've been fiddling with, so that I can have the outfits I need to shoot the scenes I want. Oh, and bonus points if you can ID the model. :D
ETA: The first cap is no longer shiny! See!

Yay! I'm very excited about this.

on 2012-02-18 12:12 am (UTC)'Tis Dotty. I figured since she'll be the one wearing them eventually, I should give her first crack at them.

on 2012-02-18 12:13 am (UTC)Di explained how to fix the cap, so it's not shiny anymore. I added pics so you can see the difference.
Yes, it's the main house twin Dotty.

on 2012-02-17 09:24 pm (UTC)I like the first blue better myself, and I really think the second cap is better than the first.
I wish you all the best with finishing this up too. Are you going to show auxiliary corps too?

on 2012-02-18 12:16 am (UTC)Thanks! I'm 95% certain I'm going with the first aide's uniform as it's really close to the color I saw in a pic. I think the first nurse's cap looks better now that I've fixed it so it's not shiny (see updated pics).
I'd like to show the auxiliary corps, but I need to see what their uniforms looked like first. I'm hoping with a few minor color alterations I can get the ones from All About Style to work.
