Philomena Bradford Thayer unpinned her hat and set it down on her dresser. It had been another long day of marching in the right for suffrage, and she was tired. She sank down onto the bed with a small sigh. As she smoothed the quilt under hand hands, she realized how quiet the house was. With Asher, Octavia, and Raymond and their friend running in and out, not to mention Jane and Victor and their acquaintances, the house was usually bustling with activity. But not today. Phily was grateful for the unexpected silence.

She’d left the door to her room open a crack, and through the small space a wonderful smell wafted. It smelled as if someone was cooking a roast, one of Phily’s favorites. With a sudden burst of energy, she got up and made her way downstairs, hoping she could steal a bite or two before dinner was served.

She came to an abrupt halt when she crossed into the dining room. It was set for two, with the Thayer’s fine silver candelabras on the table providing the only light in the room. There was a vase of wild roses, Phily’s favorite. She narrowed her eyes a bit, suspicious. Just then, Meadow came through the door that led to the kitchen, a platter with a crown roast of beef surrounded by roasted vegetables and filled with stuffing.

“Oh good, you’re home. I was beginning to worry.”

“What’s going on, Meadow? Where’s everyone else?”

“Let me see. Victor’s taken the boys to the mountains for the weekend to go camping, and Jane took Octavia to New Sim City to do some shopping. They’ll all be back on Sunday after lunch.”

“Then why did you go through all this trouble when it’s just us for dinner?”

Meadow set the platter down and turned to face her partner. “You really don’t know?”

Phily shook her head. “Why don’t you enlighten me and save both of us quite a bit of time?”

Meadow took Phily’s hands and guided her to the table. “Darling, do you know what today is?”

“It’s the twenty-first of April.”

Meadow’s face flashed a slightly strained look before her expression became serene again. “Think back, Phily. Think back more than a few years. Where were we years ago on an April evening?”

Phily thought for a long moment, but nothing was coming to her mind. Then, a foggy memory drifted forward in her mind. “We were on our way home from SimEurope,” she said slowly.

Meadow beamed. “Yes, we were. In fact, it was sixty years ago today that we promised our lives to each other.”

Phily blinked. “Sixty? Has it really been that long?”

“Hard to believe, I know.”

“So you made me my favorite dinner?”

“I did, and I got you something.”

“Meadow,” Phily sighed. “You shouldn’t have.”

“Oh, hush. Open your present.”

Phily untied the red ribbon from around the package, and carefully opened the wrapping paper. She opened the small velvet covered box, and gasped when she saw what was inside.

“It’s too much,” she muttered, her fingers gently caressing the edges of the broach nestled inside the box.

“Is it? I understand yellow diamonds are the traditional gift for a sixtieth anniversary. Try it on.”

Phily lifted the broach out of the box and carefully pinned it at her throat. She got up to examine her reflection in the mirror over the sideboard. Her hand instinctively went to her throat. “It’s lovely, Meadow. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” Meadow replied, slipping her arms around Phily’s waist. “Happy anniversary, dearest.”

“Happy anniversary, love,” Phily replied.

I really wish I could have gotten them together more officially. Maybe in another 'verse, someday.

Meadow and Phily were totally awesome. I'm glad I decided to go against my initial need for "historical accurateness" and let them get married in game.
