Sakura stood in the doorway of Susan’s bedroom, watching her daughter as she slept. Tomorrow, she would start school. Sakura couldn’t believe how fast the past six years had gone by. It really seemed like just yesterday when she’d run to Danny after discovering she was pregnant. Back then, she’d never imagined living anywhere but Simpan. But since moving across the globe, she’d never been happier, except for a few moments here and there when someone felt the need to throw the crimes of her birth nation back in her face. She always kept her head up in those moments, never letting anyone outside of her family see how upset it made her. She’d also done her best to protect her children, her three little angels, from those biting words. But now, Susan would be going off to school, and Sakura wouldn’t be there to protect her. The thought was more than enough to keep sleep from coming to her on that eve of the first day of school.
She was so engrossed in her thoughts that she didn’t hear her husband coming up behind her, and she jumped a little when he slipped his arms around her waist.
“She’ll do fine, you know,” Danny said, kissing the top of her head.
“I still worry. I am her mother, so I should worry for her. That horrible woman, her grandchildren might be in Susan’s class.”
Danny couldn’t dispute that fact. Clarence Alcott’s mother hadn’t stopped her verbal assaults of Sakura after Dotty’s threats; she’d just gotten cleverer in how she delivered them. “Well, yes. Gerald Alcott is Susan’s age, so they might be in the same class. But while Mrs. Alcott is horrible, her son isn’t. Clarence is a decent fellow, as is his wife Loretta, and I can’t imagine that either of them would stand for Gerald doing anything mean.”
Sakura leaned back ever so slightly into Danny’s embrace. “I know this, and yet I still worry. She is so sensitive, and children can be so mean. I do not want her to hurt.”
“Neither do I. But at some point, someone is going to do something that hurts our daughter.”
“I do not like that,” Sakura sighed.
“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of them when the time comes.”
“You are a good man, Danny Bradford.”
He responded by kissing the top of her head again. “Come on. Susan is going to be up bright and early, and she’ll need you to help her pick out an outfit, and pack her lunch, and walk her to the bus stop. Think you can sleep some now?”
“I will try.”
Sakura stepped silently across the bedroom and bend to kiss Susan softly on the forehead. “Sweetest of dreams, my Susan-chan.”
