At long last, the penultimate chapter of my war saga is finished! Click on the picture to read Alice & Nick's portion of the War Years Chapter. Comments can be left here or on the thread at Boolprop. I hope you enjoy!
It also makes me wonder how you decided the chapter order. As Nick is the oldest, he technically should go first, but...you chose Rosalie because of Gilbert, didn't you? You didn't want that to be spoiled in another chapter. And you put Danny last because his war will end last - as he's in the Pacific til the very end. What made you decide the rest of the order?
I am amused that Buzz Grunt is in the army. :P
Poor Quinn. Everyone kills him!
Ugh...losing people is not easy, but unfortunately...they're in a war. It's going to happen. I'm glad Nick found some peace with the idea, even if he'll never be happy about it.
And there's that scene in the forest. THIS is when I really started worrying about Nick, because this scene...yeah. This is what made me worried that he might die. I'm glad he didn't, but I'm also glad that you stuck to your guns with your randomization - because, yeah, we want things to be all rosy, but war is somewhat random in how it kills, so a randomizer was really the perfect way to simulate that.
Alice looks so glamorous! Loving the pillbox hat.
Poor Taddy, surrounded by everyone who's doing better than him. He seemed more together in Rosalie's chapter, probably because it was from her point of view - and he was keeping it together as much as possible for her and for Calla. It's got to suck to lose your only son, though.
It'll be interesting to see the next generation - Steven's significantly older than, well, pretty much anyone else, due to the fact that he was actually conceived before the men went to war, rather than after they returned home. But the younger part of the generation will be full of babies, for sure.
Ah, the splitting of Germany and the entrance of communism. That'll be interesting, though in a very different way from the war.
Yeah, the atomic bomb is...yeah. I guess it was going to take something big to make the Japanese surrender, but...that? And now we've been plunged forever into the risk of nuclear war and what could happen from that. And again, it's probably for the best that you didn't film that. It would have been sheer hell to film.
I'm glad Taddy and James made up.
Yay for Nick coming home and getting to meet Steven! That's got to be interesting, meeting your kid for the first time when he's already three - I mean, kids change SO fast at that age, and he really did miss it all. For good reasons, yes, but I think Nick will be happy to be home for all later kids.
After so long of seeing Nick in various uniforms, he just looks weird in normal clothing. I guess we'll have to get used to it though!
Yay second pregnancy!
Lovely long chapter, can't wait for more, and I'm glad you didn't kill Nick!
